Overview

Koh Phangan built its reputation on one night a month — the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin beach, where tens of thousands of travelers descend for an all-night beach rave that has been running since 1987. But the island is more than that one event. It has evolved into a year-round party destination with Half Moon parties, Jungle Experience events, and a permanent nightlife scene that keeps things moving between full moons.

The adult entertainment here is different from Pattaya or Bangkok. This is backpacker and festival culture, not go-go bars. The scene is younger, cheaper, and more chaotic. Bar girls exist but are not the primary draw — the draw is the party itself. Travelers come for the music, the beach, the cheap buckets of Red Bull and local whisky, and the anything-goes atmosphere that Haad Rin generates on a good night.

Drugs are a significant part of the underground culture here and the authorities know it. Police crackdowns happen periodically, particularly around Full Moon events. Do not buy from strangers on the beach — undercover police and informants operate during party nights. Alcohol is the safe play. Standard Thai laws apply for everything else.

Haad Rin Beach

Haad Rin Beach

Haad Rin is the epicenter of Koh Phangan's party scene and home to the Full Moon Party. The beach itself is beautiful — a curved white sand bay flanked by rocky headlands. On a normal night it's a pleasant stretch of beach bars with decent music and a relaxed crowd. On Full Moon night it transforms into one of the most intense party environments in Southeast Asia.

The main strip of bars runs along the beachfront — Cactus Bar, Tommy Resort, Zoom Bar, and dozens more. Fire dancers perform on the sand. Music pumps from every direction. The crowd is overwhelmingly young and international. It's one of those experiences that's hard to describe and impossible to forget, for better or worse.

Thongsala

Thongsala

Thongsala is Koh Phangan's main town and ferry pier — the practical hub of the island. It's less flashy than Haad Rin but has its own relaxed bar scene along the waterfront, good restaurants, and the best selection of guesthouses and services on the island.

The Half Moon Festival and Jungle Experience events are held at venues near here, drawing a dedicated crowd of electronic music fans separate from the Full Moon mainstream. The night market on the pier road is a good spot for cheap food before a night out. Most travelers pass through but fewer stay — which keeps it genuinely local in feel.

Bucket of spirits and mixer ฿150-250. Beer at a bar ฿70-100. Guesthouse near Haad Rin from ฿400/night (basic), rising to ฿1,500+ for decent rooms. Full Moon Party entry ฿200-400 wristband. Food from ฿60 at beach shacks. The island is cheap outside of the Full Moon week when prices spike.

Ladyboy Scene

Not a notable part of the scene here. The island's entertainment is party-focused rather than adult-venue-focused. Visit Samui or Bangkok if that's the priority.

Where to Stay

Haad Rin: ground zero for the Full Moon Party — noisy, fun, chaotic. Good if you want to be in the middle of it. Thongsala (the main pier town): more local, quieter, good restaurants and bars, central location. Haad Yao and west coast beaches: beautiful, calm, a world away from the party scene. Choose based on why you're going.

Safety & Scams

Bangkok is safe for tourists. The risks are almost entirely financial — know the scams before you land.

The Full Moon Party is the highest-risk environment in this guide. Drink spiking happens. Theft from bags and bungalows is common on party nights. Do not bring your passport or large amounts of cash to the beach. Watch your drink at all times. Go with people you know or stay aware of your surroundings. The morning after is usually fine — the island is safe in general outside of party nights.

Tourist police hotline: 1155. English speakers available 24/7.

Getting Around

Songthaews run fixed routes across the island for ฿100-200 per person. Renting a scooter (฿200-300/day) is the practical option but the roads are hilly, narrow, and poorly lit — accidents are common, especially after party nights. Boat taxis run between beaches. Haad Rin is accessible by ferry directly from the mainland or via Koh Samui.

Best Time to Go

December to April is peak season with the best weather — clear skies, calm seas, and manageable crowds outside of the Full Moon event itself. January Full Moon is particularly good. The southwest monsoon hits from May to October, bringing rough seas on the west coast and occasional cancellations of boat services from Samui. The Full Moon Party runs regardless of weather.

Cannabis

🌿

Thailand legalised recreational cannabis in 2022 — the first country in Southeast Asia to do so.

Openly available and widely consumed on the island. Dispensaries operate in Thongsala and Haad Rin. Much more visible here than on the mainland. Exercise judgment around party nights when police activity increases.
