Overview
Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island and its most developed beach destination. It has a split personality: pristine beaches and luxury resorts on one side, a raucous nightlife strip on the other. Chaweng Beach Road is the main drag — a long stretch of bars, clubs, and adult venues that runs parallel to one of the best beaches in the country.
The island attracts a wealthier crowd than Pattaya. Package tourists, honeymooners, and party travelers all mix together. Prices are higher than the mainland but the setting more than compensates. The nightlife is real — go-go bars, beer bars, and massage parlors line Chaweng — but the island's beauty means you can reset on the beach every morning regardless of what happened the night before.
Same legal framework as mainland Thailand. Adult venues operate openly, particularly along Chaweng Beach Road. Police are present but not aggressive toward tourists. Standard discretion applies.
Red Light Districts
Chaweng Beach Road
Chaweng Beach Road is Koh Samui's main nightlife artery — a long strip running parallel to the beach packed with open-air beer bars, go-go clubs, rooftop bars, and everything in between. The north end is more upscale with cocktail bars and clubs; the central section is where the adult entertainment concentrates. By 10pm the strip is buzzing. By midnight it's at full capacity.
Beer bars line both sides of the road with bar girls sitting out front. Go-go venues are interspersed among them — less concentrated than Pattaya's Walking Street but spread across several hundred meters. The beach is a two-minute walk from any point on the strip, which makes Samui's nightlife uniquely easy to balance with a proper beach holiday.
Lamai Beach
Lamai is Samui's second beach town, about 15 minutes south of Chaweng. It has its own bar strip — smaller, cheaper, and more local in feel. The infamous Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks are here (naturally shaped rock formations that have become a quirky tourist landmark), and the nightlife strip nearby caters to a mix of budget travelers and regulars who prefer a less chaotic scene than Chaweng.
Prices are lower across the board — beer bars, food, and accommodation all come in cheaper. The girls are friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. A good option if Chaweng feels overwhelming, or if you want to base yourself somewhere quieter while still being within reach of the action.

Ladyboy Scene
Present but smaller than Pattaya or Bangkok. A few dedicated venues along Chaweng cater to this preference, mixed into the general bar strip. The cabaret shows (similar to Tiffany's in Pattaya) are popular tourist entertainment here as well.
Where to Stay
Chaweng Beach: best location for nightlife and beach access, most hotels and resorts, busiest area. Lamai Beach: quieter alternative 15 minutes south, still has bars and nightlife but less intense. Bophut (Fisherman's Village): charming, upscale, low-key — good if you want to sleep well and day-trip to Chaweng. Budget rooms start around ฿600, beachfront resorts ฿3,000+.
Safety & Scams
Bangkok is safe for tourists. The risks are almost entirely financial — know the scams before you land.
Samui is generally safe. The main risks are motorbike accidents on winding roads, drink spiking in busy tourist bars, and jet ski scams on the beach. Watch your drink, use Grab rather than negotiating with local taxis, and never rent a jet ski without documenting existing damage first.

Getting Around
Songthaews run a circular route around the island for ฿50-100. Grab is available and the most reliable option in Chaweng. Renting a scooter (฿200-300/day) gives full freedom but the roads outside town are hilly and poorly lit. Taxis exist but will quote tourist prices — always negotiate or use Grab.
Best Time to Go
January to April is peak season — clear skies, calm seas, and low humidity. November and December can bring heavy rain and rough seas on the east coast (Chaweng side). The Gulf of Thailand's weather patterns mean Samui sometimes gets rain when Phuket is sunny. September and October are the wettest months — best avoided.
Cannabis
Thailand legalised recreational cannabis in 2022 — the first country in Southeast Asia to do so.
Dispensaries operate in Chaweng and Lamai. Quality varies significantly — stick to established shops rather than street sellers. Consume in private. The island is relaxed about it but public consumption draws attention from both police and other tourists.
